Coleman was born and raised in the town of the Lancashire town of Blackpool. She was a headgirl in the Arnold School, Blackpool and received straight A's in her A levels. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who made it clear at a press conference held on the 21st March 2012 that Coleman would replace Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left.
